The operations of the IMS Institute extend across numerous fields within basic and applied scientific disciplines in civil engineering, as well as in energy, mechanical engineering, and the process industry.
The core idea behind founding the IMS Institute was the need for a single institution that, in addition to research and development, would also handle the regular quality control of raw materials, semi-finished goods, and products of the construction and metal industries.
Today, the Institute for Testing of Materials participates in almost all major construction projects in Serbia, during the design, control, testing, and supervision phases, as well as in the condition assessment and revitalization of hydro and thermal power plants.
The strength of the IMS Institute lies not only in its numerous laboratories but also in the diverse specialized services it provides, such as its own construction technology solutions and prestressing systems. Through its multidisciplinarity from its founding to the present day, the Institute represents a reference institution for all fields of civil engineering and the building materials industry.
A decades-long tradition of professional activity in the aforementioned areas, a series of constructed projects at home and abroad, state-of-the-art equipment, and specialized highly professional staff have established our reputation as a trusted partner to a large number of major investors, contractors, and consultants, earning us numerous prestigious awards and accolades.
The Institute for Testing of Materials is accredited as a research and development institute in the field of technical-technological sciences (civil engineering, mechanical engineering, energy), where it achieves significant results in basic and applied research, transfers acquired knowledge to the economy, educates personnel, and invests in research infrastructure. In addition to regular duties, the research staff is engaged in research projects, collaborates with a large number of related institutions, organizes numerous scientific and professional conferences, publishes research results in international and domestic journals, and applies developed technical solutions and patents.
The IMS Institute is the only representative from Serbia in the European Network of Building Research Institutes (ENBRI), being the sole member of this association of top European institutions from a country outside the European Union.
Since its inception, the work of the IMS Institute has been focused on various areas:
- Scientific research activity and development in civil engineering and the production of building materials, energy, mechanical engineering, the process industry, and other fields
- Laboratory testing and research of materials and products
- Testing and research of building and mechanical structures
- Conformity assessment and inspection of construction products and structures (iron and steel; metal structures: steel, aluminum), inspection of components of power plants and facilities during construction, reconstruction, revitalization, and overhaul, welding technologies of metallic materials
- Geotechnical research and ground testing
- Development and application of construction technologies and prestressing systems
- Preparation and control of all phases of project documentation
- Consulting services and expert supervision
- Certification of construction products
- Proficiency testing of testing laboratories
- Verification of greenhouse gas emission reports
